In brief, this effort would like to see a patch that does somthing like the following for the eCommerce Module.
1. Set different variation lists that can be applied to a given product(s).
2. Variation details should be integrated in the other commerce modules, workflow, invoicing, inventory.
A few notes,
This idea has been discussed exstensively with different "solutions" suggested. Since none are forthcoming, this effort is placing a priority on a simple patch with basic funcationality. If interest is sufficient for a more advanced version in the future, we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Actually, this feature is under active development. It sounds like as I am writing this post work is being done to incorporate into 4.7 and perhaps update 4.63.

If you know how to do patching you might be able to get a copy of it working now, though the rest of us mere mortals will have to wait for an a new version of the module.
