hello, great job.
i noticed that clicking the 'discuss this' link immediately creates a new forum topic. the issue is some people coming to a new site would click everything to see where it goes, even if they had no intention of discussing anything. this creates a few empty forums, which doesnt look good (to me). would it be better to ask user to confirm forum creation? or perhaps automatically create the topic only after the user creating the topic actually submits a comment?

+1 for this idea

Yes, I like this idea too, and will see what I can do to include it in the next release. In fact, I've been considering how to overhaul the entire mechanism by which the forum topics are created, in order to alleviate a whole number of issues that have been reported here as well as on the production site I built this module for in the first place. More to come in the next week or so... :)

Exciting to hear. Looking fwd to it. This tool is very important for our site (though we're not live w/it yet, we have something vaguely similar in the non-Drupal site we are moving out of... so folks expect it).

I've implemented this feature, along with a complete revamp of the mechanism by which forum topics are created.

The commit is here: http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=171507

This is quite a sweeping change, which allows the user to initiate the discussion as an original forum topic (rather than creating the topic first, then allowing the user to comment on it). The discussion is thus 'owned' by whomever initiates it, and so the admin setting to set the forum topic to a particular author is removed.

I'd appreciate any testing/feedback on this. I'm pretty sure the basic confirmation form is working nicely, but I'd also like to confirm that issues #331616 and #337491 are also fixed.
