I was thinking that the control panel would be an even more convenient tool if its interface remained available (somehow embedded in admin pages) while viewing settings for various modules, etc. This might be practically impossible (or even undersireable from a certain point-of-view) and might require patches to the Drupal core (cringe). Anyway, I just thought I would propose this possibility (I'm specifically thinking how the interface works in Mambo-- it's basically always there).

I don't see making this kind of change to the Control Panel module. At some point it may make sense to incorporate parts of the Control Panel module into the new Administration module for 4.7. Together, the two may provide more of what you are looking for.

Yes. And actually, the patch that allows you to set a path for the control panel in the system settings makes the control panel actually useable. So even that small fix is something that makes the control panel a convenient interface, rather than just another menu item. Keep up the good work on these modules. They do seem to be a good step forward in making Drupal administration more user friendly!
