I think it would be very useful for the docs team to use Diigo or an equivalent tool to have "meta" project/task-related discussions, e.g. on the structure of certain section of a book's hierarchy or where a particular page belongs.
The big advantage of page annotation tools is that comments specific to a given page only show when browsing that page, specific parts of the text can be highlighted and commented upon without a lot of copy/pasting. This works more efficiently than "endless threads" about a general topic and keeps the focus on the specific pages being discussed.
This idea originally came out of #254947: reorganize Theme handbooks, but I think would help facilitate our work on the overall re-design as well.
Since many interested parties won't see the comments posted by such a tool, it should only be used for temporary "meta" discussions during implementation of a specific project; anything of long-term value that would be useful for reference later should be summarized and posted back here.
Substantive discussions on the content topic itself should take place here or via book pages in the first place.

HansBKK commentedAnyone testing Diig out can post a link to a page you want to have a bit of dialog on, or use the http://drupal.org/node/325270">image-handling handbook section and I should see your comments next time I visit the page.
If you want to test a different tool let me know and I'll probably play along, as I'm interested in this tool category for using with clients, especially while discussing design issues and prototyping.

HansBKK commentedtypo, sorry

HansBKK commentedIf anyone wants to test Diigo, download the toolbar, visit any of the pages in the image-handling modules handbook section I'm currently working on from http://drupal.org/node/325270">here on down, and post comments directly on the pages using your new Diigo sidebar.
If you want to check out other tools, let me know here and I'll probably play along, I'm interested in this tool category for use with my clients in prototyping.

HansBKK commentedhow does that happen? :)

HansBKK commentedCreated a group for anyone checking Diigo out, so our comments on handbook pages can be flagged as private within the group. You need to join Diigo generally, then visit this URL to join the group, and note it's specifically for people already participating in the docs team work here.
http://groups.diigo.com/groups/drupal_docs
There is a forum feature for the group, in which I've posted this guideline:
Wolfflow has also created a separate Diigo group, open to anyone at all, targeted to his "starting over from scratch" ideas. http://drupal.org/node/332233

Wolfflow commented@HansBKK, ;-) It also looks here that you are building a monologue !!
++ 1 I am really in favor of "social annotation", but it could be easily implemented and it will AFAIK on Drupal.org within the Drupal.org prototype development the Drupal Association Redesign Project.
Cheers

heather commentedOK- I checked out Diigo! It is good, yes, and you can sort out alot of comments/ideas- much quicker, since you essentially do them in situ.
This is a great tool, I could see me using this in other applications. Great for collaboration and research.
It would be great to get others on the docs team involved.
Have you already posted this to the docs mailing list?

add1sun commentedI think in terms of picking a tool like this, Diigo is a fine choice. We can continue to evaluate it and get more people's thoughts it as a tool from the rest of the team. I'll say that this issue is marked fixed, in that we will play around with Diigo. No need to run around trying out all the options. :-) I would appreciate it if someone would write this up in an email to the mail list, explaining the purpose and how others can join in.
