If the pieces are covered by the GPL licence, doesnt that specify that you cannot bundle and include the pieces, but have to link to the origin instead?
That said, it is better to have the pieces in the module folder than in the files folder, so that is an improvement anyway. Keep up the good work :-)

My understanding of the GPL is that it allows the images to be bundled.

From the page that has one of the chess pieces:
