The following page http://groups.drupal.org/node/15778 (have to be logged in) demonstrates a neat implementation of subscriptions + cluetip (I think). Any docs/pointers on how to implement this?

You're correct, it is Notifications, not Subscriptions. Will change this to a feature request:

Update the 'subscribe' link to use a jQuery popup (thickbox/cluetip/etc) that presents the subscriptions options table.
