admin_menu slows when devel.module is loaded

It seems to me that the appearance and disappearance of the menus are delayed when devel.module is installed (perhaps when the themer part of devel is installed).
This might be an inevitable part of so much stuff going on at the screen at once, but it would be cool if it could be fixed.

Im having this problem with both the official release and the dev version.
It appears that when devel and admin_menu are both enabled. some (most) pages freeze up for 5 to 10 seconds during and immediately after page load.
(Cant scroll, focus fields, type, click, etc)
It seems to be something with the javascript. disabling admin menu seems to fix it.
The strange thing is that i have the same module combinations running on other sites and they seem to work fine.
I've gone as far as disabling all modules that could potentially be causing this an it still freezes on this particular site.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Which other modules do you have enabled on this site? Nice menus or External links perhaps? Please provide a list of all enabled modules.
