can this be done
Ive looked as the content profile module - this is great if you have created you users already - I need something to group users into carious taxonomy terms with cross linking between terms if possible

any ideas

have a look at nodeprofile. This allows you to create a profile for each user using CCK and because it is a node you can add taxonomy and do all the cool things that you can do to a node.
