Procedure for Updating Modules

ElegantSolutions - November 13, 2008 - 21:32

There is so much documentation on this site that I am having trouble finding the simple steps required to update to a newly released module. Content Construction Kit (CCK) 6.x-2.0 was released and it told me to update it but I can't find a page that has the steps to reliably do it.

I assume you are upgrading

I assume you are upgrading from another 6.x version. Then the usual procedure of updating a module should be enough:
- Set your site to off-line (in admin/settings/site-maintenance).
- Delete the old module version's directory with all its files.
- Upload the new one.
- Browse to update.php and run it, to have the database updated.

Some modules may require more. Then the developer usually includes more specific instructions in a README.txt or INSTALL.txt or UPGRADE.txt file, or in the project's page or in a "Documentation" link from there, covering different cases.

Thanks for the Reply

Actually, it is a new 6.6 install. I am just learning Drupal.

I was frustrated by the volume of info on the site, but could not find this documented for newbies like me. I just was not sure about the delete all module files and replace all.

Thanks again.
