The option for Error Placement: "Next to the corresponding field" did not work for me. The error still appeared at the top. In addition, the field was not highlighted in red.

I am using Acquia drupal 6.6 with the Garland theme. Let me know how I can help debug further.

Is 'AJAX Validation on all forms' selected? The Error Placement if you are validating with AJAX.
