0) Uploaded picture for user
1) Enabled pictures at admin/settings/user
2) Enable pictures at admin/themes/settings/bluemarine
3) Enabled "Display post information" for all node types.

Pictures still do not display. And with book nodes, the path to the image is displayed (e.g. files/pictures/picture-1.jpg), but not the actual picture.

Can't reproduce anymore. Fixed, apparently.
