I'm using ubercart recurring fee feature for a membership. Here's how I did it:
1. Setup a member user role.
2. Setup ubercart to award the member user role once the purchase of the membership is complete.
3. Setup ubercart for a monthly recurring charge

I have paypal.

For some reason step 3 does not work. Ideally, I'd like to auto-renew until the user cancels the membership.

Can someone give me some directions?

You might look at the ubercart forum, they will get you working.
