To quote Catch from http://groups.drupal.org/node/8598 :

Drupal's core forum module is much maligned. Some of this is unjustified - people expecting it to replace standalone solutions by itself and ignoring the nature of Drupal's modular framework. However, it also has some limitations which are a result of its age and require many workarounds for large community sites.

The reason why forum isn't up to our standards is because we expect the quality of modules like CCK, views, and token. Let's let the contrib developers make install profiles/distributions out of these 'site design' ideas, and instead focus on Drupal's modular framework. One example of a good reason why we shouldn't include a magazine module is ProsePoint.

#336743 would make this a 1-2 punch: User downloads Drupal. User selects 'forum' or 'advanced_forum' or 'forum_ng', and everything is setup automatically.

This is basically a duplicate of #61285: Remove poll module from core. According to http://drupal.org/node/61285#comment-835401, it's not likely to happen.

Marking as a duplicate of #61285: Remove poll module from core, but I do intend to make another push for this in smaller steps.
