User import turns hyphens (dashes) into spaces when they should be legal in drupal usernames

I need to import a large user base, and it's fairly important that the usernames maintain the dash so that I can work with the database offline (for administrative purposes) with previously written code. Anyone know if this removal of the hyphens are neccessary?
