Force select subcategory - not category - in tree view

I have a number of subcategories under 6 categories in a tree view. Only subcategories are to be selected from all of the categories. How can I allow only subcategories to be selected. Can the categories be set to be not-selectable, as text/label or to open the tree if selected?
