Imagefield Gallery settings dont effect the gallery

Im not sure if I just dont have it set up right, but all my images show in a single column. No matter what I change in the imagefield gallery admin or content types, nothing changes. I've been trying to figure this out for 2 days and I'm stumped... any ideas? Is there a step by step guide?

Ensure you have a gallery type selected in the module settings—i have noted this before myself.
Re-selecting and/or changing (even temporarily) the gallery type should might resolve this
