Running a successful multi-site install requires knowledge of how Drupal handles multiple sites and how various features of Apache can be leveraged to make the multi-site much easier to manage.

Clear and simple
I found the 10 minute multisite tutorial, http://drupal.org/node/138889#comment-2510252 to be clear and to work for me.
Not trying to spam for this one, I just spent way to much time trying to get other examples to work. I hope this one saves you time.

This video works for me.
It has, for me, cleared up many problems and misconceptions and is a very fine instructional.
I took screenshots to study parts I'm not sure about and will revisit the tut again.

I think this is more like half an hour but has some fairly useful suggestions about configuring apache that apply to non multisite installations.
