how to convert html page to drupal theme

I am a writer, researcher and solo drupal freelancer

Sometimes what I'll do (depending on how quickly I want to get things done) is simply take my html file and a theme's page.tpl.php file, then put pertinent bits from that page into my page in the respective areas. It's quick and dirty, but typically you can get your new template at least running in Drupal to see what it may look like. If you go this route, expect to spend a bit of time 'mashing' things into the proper order.

It may be best to work from a Zen or Genesis theme...
