I created a new page. I called this page home. I then promoted this page to the homepage. How do I make this page THE home page. How do I stop the homepage from limiting the number of characters in the article and providing the 'read more' option.

You have to tell Drupal to load this page as the homepage, instead of the default teaser list.
To do this, go to Administer > Site Configuration > Site Information then scroll down to where it says 'Default front page'. Change this from the default 'node', to the relative URL of your custom homepage (i.e. if your homepage is located at http://www.example.com/node/1, enter 'node/1')
