I installed this splendid module which does almost nothing - it just embeds an iframe from mibbit.com.
So when i tried to chat in cyrillic alphabet (with several browsers on the same page) within the mibbit iframe - all was fine - cyrillic worked.
When I tried and joined the room from within mIRC and opera(yes it has a builtin irc client) - the cyrillic msgs from mibbit to mIRC/opera were fine,
but msgs FROM mIRC/opera TO the online mibbit room were ???-s.
So I checked out the mibbit bug-tracking site and there found out that it is a problem of mIRC and other clients that right now have partial support for unicode...
So I ended up successfully using Mozilla's addon Chatzilla ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16 )
it handles unicode and chatting in cyrillic works well in both directions...
Thought this might help someone. All said remains true for all unicode languages .

rsvelko commentedI propose the maintainer includes a brief text in the readme.txt and the project's page that users with non-english langs should use chatzilla or other clients that work well bi-directionally with mibbit.
