Dynamic display block, views rotator/ carousel help

I was using drupal 6 with dynamic display block, but changed to drupal 5 as i realized there were a few modules i needed that arent available in 6.

But im having problems trying to create something similar to ddb. Ive read that that modules like views rotator or carousel can create this but I dont see how.

Ive been trying to to this for weeks and have got no where. if you look on http://uk.msn.com/ youll see that box on the left under the menu. It has 3 thumbnails with a bigger box next to them. The box corresponds to the 3 smaller thumbnails, and this is what I am trying create.

Ive been trying and trying but have no idea how people are getting that modules like totator or carousel can be used to create something similar to this, can someone give me a more in depth guide or tut how i can create this type of block.
