As Textimage only accepts ttf or otf font files, I am wondering if these are actually available for Linux. TrueType font are made for Windows and Mac. About OTF I am not sure. But I think it is similar, as OTF also is made by Microsoft.

.ttf and .otf files are just files, as long as you have the files and FreeType support there is no issue. I develop on an Ubuntu setup, so I can confirm 100% it works.

Out of curiousity, what prompted this issue? Did it not work for you, or where you mearly speculating?
