Corporate Content Management System ???
I work for a mid-size company of around 2000 employees and we are exploring open source options for traditional content management system of our files not web contgent management of articles, stories, etc. Most of what I see about Drupal appears to fit the web content managemnt for creating websites full of articles, stories, blogs, etc. vs. what we need for allowing users to add, version, manage files such as word, excel, pdf, visio, etc. type documents.
Question: Can Drupal be used for content managment of files using modules or core capability and if so can someone point the way on what I need to be looking at in order to understand its ability around this. For a comparision Alfresco is very well targeted around this type of content management but their LDAP integration is not very mature vs. Drupal I've already been able to get this working. I am just not seeing the ability to manage files and we need that as well as the other features around collaboration that Drupal provides.

The right term for what you
The right term for what you are looking for is Document Management System. Drupal out of box is not a good for such application. There is a drupal group dedicated for such discussion , you may want to take a look there at http://groups.drupal.org/document-management
Drupal can be used to
Drupal can be used to somewhat mimic the functionality of a document management sytem-- but it's not really a substitute. I you were looking at doing a project that was 75% traditional content management and 25% percent document management, then you might want to settle for document management with drupal.
For a document management system that does no or little content management, drupal really doesn't make much sense. I would take a look at knowledgetree and/or alfresco.
