Would it be possible to use PHP and SQL statements to display recent activity on my "user home" page?

For example, user "Jon Girard" makes a post in the "Addie Black" user guestbook, it would display something like "Jon Girard said to Addie Black: Hey what's up?.. A moment ago"

I suppose this would have to be a module.

Yes, this would have to be a separate module. And it's called Activity.
