I'm having very much problems trying to build a multi-language site (using Dutch and English languages).
I've installed the i18n module, activated all it's components, activated the 'locale' and 'content translation' modules from core drupal.
I've also installed the 'consistent language interface' module which apparently fixes some issues when switching language.
In the header I've placed the consistent language interface switcher.
The default language is set to english.
I have no problems translating all the interface text and all of my custom nodes (which contain just plain text).
However, when I open my browser (IE) and go to my home page, it automatically selects the Dutch language.
Even when I click on the english flag in the header (the language switcher), it does not do anything at all.
When I log in as an administrator (default language set to english in the user profile) it still displays all in dutch. But this time, when I click the english flag it does switch everything to english.
However, the moment I log out it switches back to Dutch.
Has anyone run into the same issues and know how to solve them?

Hi, i have the same effect,
Hi, i have the same effect, but just with IE browsers. Firefox works well.
I think when you are logged in as an user, you have a language assigned and this makes language swiching to go.
I played around with URL alias to set both nodes for the frontpage to the same name and assign this name as the frontpage; I tried with a new view with selection of the language flag etc. etc. and have to say it's a bug. And to me, it has to be fixed in Drupal. Next workaround will be to add both language nodes onto the frontpage and let users then select the language.
Have look at my site: http://www.november-ag.ch
