email addresses turned to links- style not quite right

Using the bbcode links converter I noticed that email addresses converted to links appear in a larger font than other text. Using FF Web Dev Toolbar looked at source and noticed that the email addresses are encoded in some way using javascript.
I think I like that idea but how do I style the email address links?

If I use the core link converter, the email addresses look like they should, but then they aren't encrypted (I assume the advantage is spam avoidance?)
