Losing Modules no longer required

I have been experimenting with lots of different modules to see if they will achieve exactly what I want. However, quite a few of them don't seem to have any option to uninstall themselves, and even when I think I have, they still appear in the list of modules.
I have even totally removed the module from the sites/all/modules directory - but still the option appears.
Some examples which have left a whole section in my modules list are photos, and CCK
How can I tidy this lot up so that they don't appear before I move my system over to a production environment

What is xds.txt
What is this directory xds.txt? its the one that seems to have the extra stuff in it that corresponds to the additional items in the module list
