I have installed, activated the modules (all 9), but when I go to Content types and select a content type the "add field" option is not visible. I have tried de-activating, uninstalling, deleting, uploading and activating again, checked that all files are present, but still...I cannot add fields. What can I have done wrong?

I am using Drupal 6.6, Zen classic.

Hi, thanks for your reply. When I go onto the tab "manage fields" it looks just like that. Except that I do not get any label field, so I cannot put in any label, which leads to the whole field being rejected... What AM I doing wrong?

Try to set the deafult theme garland back and have a look then.
This could be a theme bug.

Thanks for the help. I did not think to try it out, I figured that ZEN Classic would be so widely used that it should have been known.

Shame, I really liked the Zen Classic theme...

I extended the classic zen theme and the label disappeared. Back to Garland..

I selected garland theme but also missing add field in cck page.
what to do ?
I only installed cck module in my site nothing else.

I'm having the same problem, but slightly different. After creating a custom node type, when I click on either the "edit" link or the "manage fields" link, I get the same page (different url, but same page) and it's the "edit" page. I even tried switching back to Garland, per the suggestion here, but no luck. Same situation.

Any ideas what could be causing this, and how to fix it???

Hi lachmac,

I think the answer is simple - fill in the field you want to add than press save and the field shows up in the list above. I wanted to add an image here but it seems not to be possible - so I hope the info is enough.

New field .....
Label
field_
Field name (a-z, 0-9, _)
(blank)
HelpType of data to store.
(blank)

Form element to edit the data.

then hit Save below.

I am also experimenting with CCK 6.x-2.1. and I can't add fields to groups- maybe you are more successful if this advice solved your problem -

Once you succeeded - can you let me know if you also have a problem with adding fields to groups. It seems there is no group option visible. Of course first you would have to add a group as described above for adding a field.

I have the same problem with any theme - although I did start with something based on Zen Classic.
I don't get any option to add fields or groups whatever. Driving me nuts. I notice a number of posts on this subject and none seem to attract any attention let alone answers. Must be soing something wrong but can't figure out what

I've been knocking my head against the wall trying to understand why the label and the 'add field' tabs are not available when editing / managing fields with a custom content type. What is missing? drupal 6.10.. thanks

I tested the method above..(again) but this time I logged on using Mozilla vs. using Internet Explorer. The labels are visible in Garland. visible in zen classic. visible in my custom theme... I logged off; Opened IE7 and went through the same steps and the label field is visible for a flash.. but then gone.. and unavailable.
I logged back in using firefox and the label field was available. I am able to add the field then all the pertinent details relevant to that field.

Anyone else verify this / confirm their experience with this? thanks

I was using IE7 and I just restarted this morning which installed some updates. That's when I stopped seeing the label fields. In Firefox it works just fine.

I am having the same problem, the field is missing in ie7 and firefox.

I just set up drupal and this is the first major set-back. Anyone have any ideas?

I had this problem regardless of theme and browser also. It turned out to be user error - make sure you enable at least one of the field-type CCK modules (e.g. 'Number'). If you only enable the core 'Content' module, CCK doesn't know how to create anything.

Or, read the README.txt that comes with CCK, it was my mistake to think I didn't need to.

It doesn't work for me. I have selected text and date and number fields in CCK, but still display fields option is completely missing from the content type page and it is not possible to add new field either. It happened after upgrade from Drupal 6.4 to 6.10. The following error is displayed when trying to go to Field field on the content type page.

Changing Theme, Browser doesn't make any difference

* warning: ksort() expects parameter 1 to be array, null given in /sites/all/modules/drupal-contrib/cck/includes/content.admin.inc on line 65.
* warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /sites/all/modules/drupal-contrib/cck/includes/content.admin.inc on line 69.

P.S. It works now. It looks as if there was a problem with the database update, which didn't run correctly.

... on the Edit Content Management page. And when I point the browser to: .../node-type/job/fields, it still goes to the CM page. I can't get to any page for adding fields.

Possible cause (??): I'm getting a MySQL 1045 error occasionally: "Access denied for user 'user'@'localhost' (using password: YES)" Am I unable to access the DB to add fields? See my post in " http://drupal.org/node/49710#comment-2483304 " Thanks. Eliot

I have tried clearing all caches, de-activating, uninstalling, deleting, uploading and activating again, checked that all files are present, but still...I cannot add fields. I am using the default version of Garland as my administration theme and my browser is Firefox 11.0 (up to date as of today). I have also checked the known incompatabilities (I don't even have the Devel module installed).
Has something changed that the online documentation for CCK has not caught up with yet?
Any other pointers to what I have done wrong would be very welcome as I need CCK working properly for Rule Set development work.

The reason the "add fields" option is missing is because the CCK user interface has changed since D5.x, and the online documentation has not caught up with the D6.x version yet. The new interface is far from intuitive and takes some getting used to. The form submission workflow is a 2-stage or 3-stage process, depending on the kind of field you are trying to add. For D6.x, what you have to do is go to "Content types >>Edit [actual content type - page, story or whatever]>>Manage fields" and fill in the "Add>>New field" form items. Then you "Save", which takes you to the second stage of the process where you define things like help text, size of text area and so on. Radio buttons, checkboxes and selection sets are a bit more tricky. You can't set the default value with these until you "Save" the form and then re-open it again (3rd stage) by clicking the "Configure" link in the "Manage fields" form. At this point the "Default value" form section should now be populated with the radio buttons, checkboxes or selection set you previously specified in stage 2.
You have to avoid suicidal tendencies with regard to the additional "N/A" option that CCK adds to your list of (radio button, checkbox and selection set) options. To get rid of it from your updated content template you have to do two things in the 3rd stage: You first have to check the actual (radio button, checkbox and selection set) option you wish to make the default in the "Default value" section and then check the "Required" checkbox located a little further down. Somewhat maddening is that the "N/A" option will still appear in the "Configure" form regardless of the state of the "Required" checkbox, which explains a lot of the confusion out there (apparently, this is not a bug). You have to try creating your updated content type before you can verify that the "N/A" option has in fact been eliminated from the updated template.
