This is a 2 part question as I can't find any answers here on the forum yet. Aside from the normal download and untar the file in the module directory, what other configuration is needed to get gallery operating? And do I need a seperate gallery install created (does it have to be v2.x or will 1.x work?)?

Also, I already have a site running Gallery 1.3x, is there a way to integrate that?

The gallery.module has an INSTALL.txt file which describes it. You can also check out http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:How_to_Embed_Gallery2_in_Dr...

It is G2 only.

nice got it working - defualt theme dosn't work so hot with the Drupal Kubrick layout =/

You may want to try the version given in http://drupal.org/node/32393 as this has a css file to try to improve the G2 look in Drupal themes.
