Are there ideas to make it D6 compatible?

Heh - definitely. Just curious, are you using it?
The actual goal is to get the required changes for core into Drupal 7.x. Also, the User Display UI module will soon rely on merlinofchaos' to administer and configure user display styles.

Any progress with ctools? Maybe maintainers provide some info so community may help - great idea with api

Subscribe, I read that was the only way to have users avators with guestbook...
Geustbook will use user display api to display avatar.
