Real Name messes up author field for new nodes

I love the idea of this module and things seem be working well except that it wants to overwrite the correct "user name" with the "real name" when authoring new nodes. I found this related post:

However I'm using the 5.x tree. When I tried to upgrade from 5.xrc3 to 5.xdev I saw no change in behavior. Was the fix mentioned in this intended for 6.x only? Is there a patch or method for getting it to work correctly for version 5?
