Simplenews problem - HTML *good* but plain text *bad*

Hi. I am using the standard simplenews template to create a newsletter email, and the html version (tabled) looks fine, but when viewing as plain text there are lots of spaces, and a numbered reference list, even though I select inline links in the settings. Are there any updates or fixes for this?
