It looks like the only configuration options are based on taxonomy and node type. I'd really like this type of behavior based on aliased paths, but I don't see how this would work.

Oh I see, the menu trails options are available on the token list page. that makes sense. very cool!

sorry, that was confusing. if you go to the pathauto admin page (admin/build/path/pathauto) you should see the menutrails options appear in the 'Replacement values' list.

for me they appear at the bottom of this list:

[menu-trail-parents-raw]
The menu trail leading up to but NOT including the node -- RAW
[menu-trail-parents]
The menu trail leading up to but NOT including the node
