Just an idea - could you please add something like submodule 'guestbook_views' which will be do guestbook lists/blocks by views?
It is a lot of easy for you and for themers too do lists/block lists in views - it is really great for theme blocks, lists, incl. ajax, etc.
views 2 are really very strong.

You could provide a patch and we'll see. Marking as duplicate of #72607: Use entities for guestbooks and guestbook entries until that happens. Feel free to re-open this issue.
