Install profile api

I'm quiet new to drupal, yada, yada, yada, and I'm looking to Install and configure Install_profile_api for D6 to streamline production. I'm used to downloading, installing, configuring modules but find the Install_profile_api to be quiet cumbersome. The Readme file is quiet alien to me and was looking for Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 approach in layman's terms. Any help would be greatly appretiated.

Dunno if you hit this bug, but: #338552: Included README.txt doesn't apply to Install Profile API
Anyway, this code isn't really helpful for end-users trying to build sites. It's for people writing Installation profiles. More info about install profiles here: http://drupal.org/node/306267
