I've taken up the torch of the San Diego DrupalCamp that's happening in January, and I read that there might be a way to get our camp featured in the ad box on the d.o homepage, so I'm asking here, officially-like.
Our camp will be held on the terrace level of the San Diego Convention Center in a balmy 71 degree city in the middle of winter. We're already sponsored by Red Bull, Achieve Internet San Diego, and there's a coffee company sponsorship in the works as well. What do you say?
My girlfriend is a photographer, and used one of her San Diego skyline pictures to make this prospective homepage ad. It's 200px width by 221px height, so it should fit just perfectly.
In addition, the camp's website, at http://drupalsd.com, is a project-of-love by myself and several others who are making a DrupalCamp install profile that anyone can grab and use to get themselves up and running fast. It's configuration details can be edited by the prospective camp's organizers before going live, and it will include a way to choose whether to have just a basic site with calendaring and session voting, or whether to include a backend conference management and organization package with Tasks, Timelines, and the like.
So, can we have our ad on the homepage?

killes@www.drop.org commentedDo you have an ad ready?
senpai commentedYeah, it's at http://groups.drupal.org/files/drupalcamp_san_diego_ad_d-o.jpg
Killes and I had an IRC chat. We're delaying this until the weekend.

gregglesThat ad is slightly wider than normal - I think the dimensions are flipped.
http://drupal.org/sites/all/themes/bluebeach/spotlight/spotlight-associa... is 200 by 221.

I don't know if this is a problem for bluebeach. I know that at low resolutions the homepage layout can fall apart, though.

Amazon commentedAre we really going to run an ad for Drupalcamp San Diego in Europe, Asia?
Is this a good use of that space? No, obviously not.

add1sun commentedWell we ran one for Drupal Italy. If we ran it for one camp, then we can't very well say no to all other camps. By running the Italy one (which I didn't necessarily think was right) we basically said that we will run camp ads on d.o from now on. Until we have a clearly defined policy on this, we have sort of opened the floodgates with no real reasonable way to say no.

drummI think it is fine to say no, as long as we do it consistently. It is fine to change policies, as long as we don't change too often.
If the ad does run, it needs to be the proper dimensions and style. A bunch of examples are at http://drupal.org/logo-special-events. The corners should be rounded. If a basic sans-serif font is used, use the free Bitstream Vera Sans family.
In an ideal world, we would run these ads based on the user's location, to increase relevance. Engineering something like that should not happen until after the redesign is finished.

senpai commentedThen I'm withdrawing my request. The ad is apparently not up to the specs or standards of the drupal community and does not pertain to the world-at-large, so therefore shouldn't be placed on the homepage. Besides, this camp just isn't gonna be big enough to warrant it.
