After a healthy bit of thought, I think I'm gonna mark this as a "wont fix". Ideally, such a thing should be possible on a much higher level, with the user being able to choose which replacements are added into ANY string, not just one specific to this particular website. See http://drupal.org/node/316340 for an example.
