I've done a search and found more similar questions than answers. Any help would be appreciated.

The end users on my site have trouble when editing their profile and trying to update avatars.

1. When the users click edit and browse for a new image and click submit. The old file is deleted but the newer avatar is not uploaded.

2. When a user tries to upload an avatar without deleting the previous avatar. The old avatar still appears after refreshing the browser 3-4 times. It take over 5 minutes to appear. It's hard to tell users on the site to clear they caches each time they change an avatar. Drupals caching method has been disabled at the moment and the problem still persists.

I've used Unique avatar in the past. It hasn't officially been ported to D6 yet, but there's an unofficial port here.
