Are you using the Advanced Forum module?

Yes I am using advanced forum. For now I've got it set to only allow one sig per thread but that seems a poor workaround.

Have you turned off automatically adding users, as it says in the last paragraph of the project's front page?

Advanced Forum users: switch off automatically adding signatures to content by browsing to Administer -> Site configuration -> Signatures for Forums. Expand Other options, un-check Automatically add signatures to content and Save configuration. Signatures will be displayed twice if this is not done.

That's usually the problem (never know though, it could be a bug :) )

That cured it.
Now I'm going to go bang my head on my desk for not reading the fine manual.

Hehe, no worries. Thanks for updating the issue status. :)

The next version of this module will just switch that option off automatically, too much confusion is caused by this issue.
