I want to build a travel website with articles and information for the entire world. Kind of like a wikitravel.org except more community focused.

Im not quite sure what route to take when designing the site. Is there any way to use existing geo location data to create the basic structure of the website? There should be no reason for me to manually enter in every country in the world, every city within those countries, etc - Im thinking there must be an easier way.

Anyone try anything like this before?

Navigational structures shouldn't be hard to create with Views.

Can anyone offer any ideas?

What is the best way to create a page for every country and also major cities? Should they be taxonomy? Pages? Separate content types?

Did you succeed with your project from three years ago? Have you a Drupal-based travel site online?
