I'm looking for a way to share users across multiple sites on different servers. I know Liferay does this, but I would prefer to have this feature as part of the CMS. Can Drupal do this? If so, how?

Nothing from anyone? Is this just a dumb question?

Yes, you can do it with Drupal.
Take a look at Share a single database across multiple sites

Replying to your own post just marked it as replied by someone.

Thanks for pointing out that page, it does have some interesting discussions about this topic. Any idea if there are equivalent solutions for Drupal 6.x somewhere in the documentation/discussions? This page appears to be only for 4.x.

Sameer.

Read the next few subpages as well. AFAIK, the process is the same for D6.
Here is another pointer http://drupal.org/node/201673
