Synonyms in core search module

I suggest a great feature would be to allow admins to maintain a list of synonyms, so that e.g searching for "color" also would return nodes with "colour".

This would be useful for words which can be spelled in more than one way (color vs colour), but also for common spelling mistakes (accelerate vs. accelarate), for words which may or may not be hyphened (logfile vs. log file vs log-file) and for regular synonyms (microsoft vs evil empire).

I don't have the programming skill to contribute this myself, I'm afraid.
