Description

If I'm reading the project page correctly, this is meant to work with core forum module just like advanced forum. So I'm wondering if there is some way we can get them to work together. I, personally, can't stand threaded forums but I know a lot of users like them. And one of the features of stand alone forums is to be able to switch between threaded and flat views.

I haven't tried putting the two together, yet, to see what problems arise. But it's something I'm interested in investigating if you are interested in collaborating. I'm going to be pretty heavily into the user profile end of things until early January but, after that, will be focusing more on forums. So that would be the best time for me to work on bridging these two modules.

isnt advanced forums threaded as well? as in replies are indented after the parent anyways, rather flat with the last reply at the end?

or am i confused LOL

AF will show the threading if that's how you have your forums set up, but it's designed to be used flat. My goal here is to be able to install both of these modules and be able to switch between threaded, flat, and hybrid like stand alone software offers.

this module is named incorrectly i believe. this is what forums call the "OUTLINE" display.....ie just the title of replies and titles of "threads" from them

Well, that may be, but doesn't really affect the goal of this issue.

well i wondered if you knew what you wanted ;)

you need someone with AJAX knowledge to pull the replies as required.

And i noticed you are the author of advanced forums :D

here s how it works in the wild..in another CMS , not sure if it can be indexed by google if you need it indexed

http://dailykos.com/

NB. they have the replies expanded for guests (and google) but if u are logged in, they have the replies in OUTLINE form, and the content of replies to be AJAX'ed in as required by clicking the arrow at the start of the title

(much more advanced than this module, whose demo made it harder to follow the threads, but maybe because i was NOT logged in)

edit: good luck getting the system up and running.....i would like to see it as an option for core drupal replies

cheers

Well, what I want at this point is to find out if the maintainer is interested in collaboration. The details can be worked out later. I'm in research mode at the moment.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out when I get further on this.

Hi Michelle,

I'd certainly be interested in seeing how we can collaborate on these. Late January into February would likely be a good time to look at it as well for me. I'll be doing the parental thing more after Drupalcon and away from doing much with modules for a couple of months. I'm with you on the threaded forums, though I'm not a huge fan of forums in general, but it is something folks like. If we manage to find somebody who is really interested in maintaining and a fan of treaded forums I'll certainly have no qualms about bringing them on to maintain or co-maintain threaded forum if it makes sense to keep it as a standalone project.

Thanks,
Josh

Heh, funny module to write if you don't like forums... :)

Ok, I'm going to set this postponed for now so it doesn't clutter your issue queue. I just wanted to touch base with you now because there's no sense in me looking into it further if you weren't interested. When I have something more concrete next month, I'll pick this back up again.

Thanks,

Michelle

I have a problem with Advanced Forum guest permissions. I cannot find a way to allow guests to fully view
all forum threads. When I sign out and view, all I can view are the first posts and a "Login or register" to view or make posts.

@adamshamilton: AF doesn't have any permissions aside from permission to alter its settings. It doesn't sound like your problem has anything to do with this issue, either. I suggest posting in the forums.

AFAIC, the maintainer can won't fix this. I've moved away from using the comment module and won't be working on this.
