Have you considered making your smiley module work with WYSIWYG editors?

I'm using FCKeditor and the addition of smilies does not work at all (well... you can still type them by hand!)

I would think that it would be "as easy" as adding a new button 99% similar to the Insert Symbol button.

Well, there' some experimental code in smileys.js which is commented out, since it works in a certain case only. You may want to un-comment it and try it out. The related issue is here: http://drupal.org/node/213679
