Hi everybody! So I'm setting up drupal at my current ISP, and these dorks can't even get the cron daemon to run correctly. I'm thinking of switching hosts to someone more drupal-friendly. The thing is, this site will probably have a lot of traffic (thousands of visitors per day) and will have some ecommerce functionality. So, uptime, reliability, good/fast support, and performance are very important, but the good news is that I would happily pay a premium to get these things. I've looked over other forum topics and they are mostly about low-cost hosting... so...
Does anyone have opinions on THE BEST drupal host (uptime, performance, support) regardless of cost?

I know Dreamhost has been mentioned probably more than a few times in the low cost options, but I've been on their strictly business plan for a while and in my opinion they have been very accomodating and friendly. They are quite possibly the best I've have EVER been with (provided their extra disk and bandwidth my inflate my opinion a bit). Their tech support by email has never been longer than 24 hours (usu. around 12 hours).
My only gripe with them is their control panel software. It really blows chunks in my opinion, but you can always just ask tech. support for some help, and they'll take care of you.

i'd give a shot to bryght. They are special Drupal hosters, have not yet tried them.
Also, as I have posted already, I am using modwest as generic shared host. Not the cheapest on the block, I admit. The support is just great. I also admit that I could have good experiences with other hosters but if I pay $15 (I think, not sure) and have no problems, it definitely does not worth my time to look for a hoster where I pay $5 a month less.

Got the multisite unlimited plan. Great service and a great deal! Their True MultiSite Websites are awesome if you have multiple domains to run. Each gets it's own cpanel-style interface and private diskspace.. On my previous host, all addon domains ran as subdomains of the main domain.

Downside: Some uptime issues recently but appears to be fixed now.
Support: Their forum is pretty good, their support is not bad too but the turn around time is too long.
Other limits: 72,000 MySQL queries per user per hour
Workaround: up to 3 database admins can get up to 216,000
queries per hour with a simple round robin distribution of queries
(I figure that comes down to 2,000-10,000 visitors/hour depending on how long they stay and what they look at.
It would be nice to figure out the average number of queries per user with cache enabled.

I am not sure if the banner on my site will give you a better deal (2 month discount or so).

Media Temple!
I know that companies such as AAA, The Gap, and Diesel Jeans use Media Temple. I also use them, and have had no problems or downtime what-so-ever. I use their cheapest plan, but you can get everything on up through dedicated servers from them. I've recommended them to everyone I know, and have never heard anything bad about them, and from what I've seen their support is beyond top-notch.

So I still believe MediaTemple grid server is a big steamer getting worse all the time but I like them as a company and I recently signed up for a dv server(dedicated virtual) at $50 a month. So far I am extremely happy with it's performance. It's nothing short of fantastic. I know there are cheaper good host (I think Rackspace has a hands off $11 cloud that is supposed to be good.) but for a guy like me who does not enjoy server maintenance I think an option like this where MT handles all kernel updates and takes care of everything from Apache down is a good fit for me and well worth the money.
To all the hosting companies out there, There is a real market of people like me who know enough unix to be dangerous but just do not want to be hardware people. I am willing to pay for performance but not if it means being handed a hunk of hardware with a, its your problem now, attitude. Someone need to launch a happy medium hosting solution and people will come The MT grid server was super easy to use but it's shared host system stunk. The same easy of use on a bigger machine would be very welcome.

they installed drupal free of charge, help with any questions i've had, and response time has never been over half an hour. i'm amazed with their service... and it's only about 12 bucks a month...

We've had nothing but major downtime with Lypha. I just signed up for a hosting acount from Site5 since someone recomended them from above. So far my site has been sitting in "pending" for a couple of hours. I post more about how the move goes - and the uptime.

I am with Site5. They have recently dropped a lot in performance but rebound somewhat. I had my site taken down due to a digg flood and it took me 24 hours to get it back up. I was very upset at the slow customer support performance. They claim an average of 25min but thats not even close.
If you don't run into a lot of problems though, they are doing quite good.

DIY. Go for a colocating solution, buy decent hardware. If your site grows, split off a database server and possibly some (reverse cache) webserver front-ends. Take a look at the site configuration of drupal.org.

I noticed the advertisement banner on this page has Bluehost. I moved my sites fro them because they have poor memory allotment for Drupal. I was only able to add 5 modules to Drupal before the white screen with errors on memory shortage. i talked with their techs and they could not up the limits. I switched to dreamhost and they have been great.
