On the project description page, the README.txt for sIFR module seems to suggest that a separate directory should be created within the render module and a couple of files copied over from the download at novemberborn.net

However, the 'Current README.txt' link displays a page that makes no mention about creating a directory for sIFR etc. And, within the plugins folder, there are files related to sIFR.

Is it necessary to create the 'sifr' folder within render module and copy the files over?

Yes, there is a separate sifr-README.txt in the plugins folder for the sifr plugin. The plugins folder only contains the integration files, not the library itself.
