When I uncheck "Automatic Alias," enter a custom alias, and save the node, all is welll. When I open the Edit page for the node again, now the "Automatic Alias" button is checked. I have to remember to uncheck it and re-enter the custom alias every time I edit the node.

Seems to me that the node should remember the checked/unchecked status, with checked just as default.

Otherwise people editing the node will, as I have done, inadvertently revert to the automatic alias generation. I've had broken links from that. Bug?
