I have an interesting problem, at our site, the people that contribute articles (stories) are not necessarily members of the site.

For whatever reason, I had assumed I could enter whatever I wanted in the author field and didn't realize I could only enter members names.

We have many, many contributors and it really isn't feasible to create accounts for all of them.

Is there any way around this?

to create a new node type for your stories. You could create the author field, date field, etc, via flexinode, and turn off the "posted by" information for the flexinode content types.
