in my views i see nothing for blogs in the fields area is there a way to add it to the list of fields?

Blogs are just another content type. The content are stored in Nodes, which you should have various fields listed for. In fact, if you look at Node:Type it gives examples of 'blog entry,' 'forum posting,' etc.
