I have a client who wants to sell video on demand. I also possess limited e-commerce knowledge, as well as have the ability to create a custom CMS myself (which would probably be the best case). Using Drupal as the core, I want to sell videos. Luckily for me, the e-commerce module allows you to buy content nodes. Which is completely awesome...except that the e-commerce module has no payment gateways I can find (for Drupal 6).
I have another client who is selling quizzes over Drupal. I got a test working with Drupal 6, but realized that we're going to need Drupal 5 to support the e-commerce package. Woe is me...
So I guess my post is really asking, is there a way to implement gateways to e-commerce 6, can I switch to Ubercart, or should I backtrack to Drupal 5?
That question can be case specific, if you feel so nice as to give me answers for both ;-)
Thanks for any and all help.

I was faced with the same dilemma for a new site I'm building.
I finally came to the realization that dealing with customers' private information and money is too critical to risk by implementing an incomplete version.
So I'm building the site in 5.

Drupal 6 is as incomplete as Drupal 5; it's not incomplete.
You should go with D6. With Drupal 7 expected to be released near the end of 2009, Drupal 5 will no longer be supported.
The problem was the
The problem was the e-commerce module that isnt well supported with D6. I hope D7 has complete backwards compatibility with D6 modules!

Not likely.

No good solution
Theres really no perfect eCommerce solution for D6 at the moment. I would suggest you take a look at the Ubercart eCommerce module and see how that is coming with its support for D6. When I last used it most of the functionality was there but a few glitches kept it from production. They may be a good solution now that another 6 months has gone by. Besides that you might have to stick with D5.
